Last year Microsoft previewed a motion-sensing device that was in development as an accessory for their Xbox 360. At this time, many people realized that the Nintendo Wii was going to be getting some serious competition for their live action games with motion-sensing ability. Although the Wii has definitely lead the field with this technology for a few years, the new Xbox 360 Kinect may have some clear advantages to offer its users.
For the Microsoft Company, this is a totally new area. There are an abundance of great games available for the Xbox 360. However, most of their games are geared for the twitch gamers, the hardcore role playing gaming fans, as well as the video game audience that is more traditional. The XBox Kinect games will be bringing an entirely new sphere of gamers to the world of Xbox. Microsoft has not been shy about blatantly imitating the Nintendo Wii with regards to this aspect. It will also be side-stepping any need for additional add-ons, such as the Wii fit board, by offering a product that is much more inclusive right from the start. Taking a quick look over some of the video games which will be produced and released for use with the Kinect, clearly shows that they are building off the amazing success of the Wii.
The Microsoft Kinect has their game Fitness Evolved which is clearly a clone of the hugely successful Wii Fit games. However, unlike the Nintendo Wii, there will be no additional peripherals required in order to start burning calories immediately. Third party companies have also started producing Kinect versions imitating several of the Wii favorites, such as the Biggest Loser and Zumba Fitness. Kinect Joy Ride can not be mistaken for anything other than Xbox’s clone of Mark Kart for the Wii. It offers very similar features and game play. Even some Nintendo DS games, such as Nintendogs, has an equivalent Kinect game called Kinectimals which will allow the user to take care of a virtual pet.
Although Nintendo was the innovator who introduced motion-sensing gaming for the video game market, it looks like Microsoft Kinect is well poised to take a piece of the action. Being the first to bring a product to the market certainly has its advantages; however, the availability of Wii games is also comprised of some duds and games that are so buggy that no one even wants to play them. The future success or failure for Microsoft’s new Kinect will depend a great deal on the Kinect games they have to offer. If these games prove to be high quality, Microsoft stands to take a large share of the market.
